This is your hound on Possum…

Not quite enough lift to get airborne

I’ve always liked Bluetick Coonhounds.  If I lived in the country, I’d want to have one, but we don’t.  We live in the city, in an apartment and we have Kali, a miniature Dachshund.  She’s a pretty cool little dog, but has the annoying habit of wanting to go outside at about 4:00 a.m. every morning.  A couple of mornings ago, she woke me up to go out at about 4:30.  When we got downstairs and I opened the door she was whining and pulling on her collar; definitely in a hurry to get outside.  I got her hooked up to the leash and she tore out the back door and headed east, barking up a storm.  Two doors down, there was a possum eating the dry catfood the lady there leaves out for the “community cats.”

Kali was unaware that possums are capable of biting and clawing.  The possum, on the other hand, was unaware of the concept of “leash.”  Thankfully, the possum took off.  Kali barked until the possum was long gone.  Then she started the “little dog strut”; basically 5 minutes of running back and forth around the patio with the “That’s right.  I’m bad!” look.  Since then, every time she goes out, she spends some extra time sniffing the air for possum.

I may never get to live where I can have a bluetick coonhound, but I guess that’s alright.  I got me a possumhound.
