End of an Era (sorta kinda)

Regular visitors to the Ratlands will know that I am a vehement supporter of the right of individuals to smoke (and do pretty much any other stupid thing to themselves that they want to do). I am a smoker; have been for 30 years or so. (When I started smoking, cigarettes were $.65 a pack.) So, it is with a certain amount of trepidation that I note publicly that I’m quitting.

(Well, saying I gave up cigarettes is like saying Congress gave up pork-barrel projects: we both talk a good fight. Actually, that isn’t really fair to me. I’m a lot closer to being cigarette-free than Congress is to being pork-free.)

Truth is that quitting is pretty easy. It’s the staying quit part that’s hard. I just can’t seem to get past that first cigarette in the morning hurdle. The rest of it is variable, but I’ve gone from 1 1/2 to 2 packs a day down to 3 or 4 cigarettes a day. I’m still working on it.

One of the guys at work who knew about this project asked me how it was going. I will say here what I told him: Not as well as I would like, but better than I had expected. I guess we’ll see what happens.

Meanwhile, I’m just a wee bit cranky, edgy, distracted and not entirely decent company.  This is made more interesting by the fact that the Head Rat is quitting too.  We know enough about ourselves and each other (after having been married for 24 years) that we know now is a really good time to stay the hell out of each other’s way.   So, I’ll be hiding in my office for the next week or so.  If neither of us has killed the other or Rat Jr.  by the end of next week I will start to think about relaxing a bit.
