Electoral college

Because I am working today, and because it has been a rather slow day, I have been following live reports on the electoral college voting.  According to the reports, Texas has just put Trump’s total over the 270 necessary for election.  Texas and California started their voting process at about the same time.  California is still at it.  It is, perhaps, a sign of how jaded I have become, that I find it deeply satisfying that, at this point, what California does is completely irrelevant.

Wait, I am confused. I thought the election was done and over with on voting night, and that the electoral college votes were in that night, and that Trump was official. What’s this all about?

The electoral college vote is always later. It comes from the time when all votes were paper ballots and after the states voted and tallied up the results, the electors had to get together to vote. Before telegraph and telephone it took days to get the totals from outlying areas.
