Have you ever noticed that the opposite of “leftist” isn’t “rightist”?

My favorite left/right label dichotomy is “Moonbat/Wingnut”, but I’m just not sure if there is a direct opposite to “leftist”.  It isn’t “conservative,” as that’s part of the “liberal/conservative” dichotomy.  Depending on what parts of the internet you frequent, you could be forgiven is you were under the impression that the opposite of “leftist” is “knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, gun-clinging, bible-thumping, teabagging, racist moron”.

Personally, although there is a certain amount of deliberate redundancy, I describe myself as a “fiscally conservative, small-government libertarian,” where the opposite label is “Janeane Garafalo”.

Not allowing the opposition to define your group’s identifying label is one of the underlying keys in any ideological struggle (see Bolshevik/Menshevik, Pro-choice/Pro-life, etc.  It will never happen, given the bias of the MSM, but from a tactical standpoint, the Pro-life folks ought to be trying to get everyone to use the term “Pro-Abortion” instead of the more palatable “Pro-Choice” label.  (Actually, there are probably better labels out there, but “Pro-Death” isn’t specific enough and “Pro-Killing unborn babies” won’t fit neatly on a bumpersticker.)‡

‡That’s not a statement of my beliefs, it’s just a comment the strategy of trying to hang a label that has as much negative emotional baggage as possible on your opponent.  When I was a young man, the easiest “kiss-of-death” label you could hang on an opponent (if you could get it to stick) was “liberal”.  Ahhh, the good old days…
